Androidx. Like the Support Library, AndroidX ships separately from the Android OS and provides backward-compatibility across Android releases. AndroidX is the open-source project that the Android team uses to develop, test, package, version and release libraries within Jetpack.

Using AndroidX is highly recommended: Pepper applications and libraries developed at SoftBank Robotics use it, and Google announced it as the new standard.
