34 bitcoin wallets blacklisted by Canadian government

Cryptocurrencies have been targeted amid protests taking place across Canada. Canadian police have reportedly issued an order to blacklist crypto wallets linked to the Freedom Convoy. The order comes after the federal government enforced the emergency law for the first time in the country.

Crypto exchanges are ordered not to do business with Canadian protesters

Canadian news agency The Counter Signal reports that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) order, to which it has gained access, directs all FINTRAC-regulated entities not to conduct transactions involving a total of 34 crypto wallets.

Pursuant to the Emergency Economic Measures Order, subsection 19(1) of the Emergency Act requires us to stop facilitating any transactions related to the following cryptocurrency addresses, the police order said.

The order lists the wallets and directs that any transactions or attempted transactions should be reported immediately to the Commissioner of Police at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The Counter Signal notes that it has confirmed that some of the wallets have been holding donations in support of protests against the government's COVID-19 mandates. In total, the wallets listed are said to contain over $1.4 million worth of crypto assets, the report continued.

The situation in Canada

The latest police action came after Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau enacted the emergency law to combat illegal protests. Under the Emergency Law, the government can suspend citizens' rights to freedom of movement and association, including by force if necessary. The government had previously blocked donations for the protesting truck drivers via the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe.

Canadian truckers began protesting last month after the government ordered all cross-border truckers to get vaccinated against COVID-19. However, the government claims that the health protection measures are necessary to combat the spread of the novel virus.

However, opinions are divided as to which side should yield to the other. Many observers, including Elon Musk, have expressed support for the protesters.
