The trucker protests in Canada continue to escalate. The protesters originally called for the uncompromising withdrawal of the quarantine regulation in cross-border traffic between Canada and the USA. This hits truckers particularly hard if they are not vaccinated. In the meantime, however, the protest is directed overall against the government's corona measures. In order to make themselves heard, the truckers block important connecting roads and the capital Ottawa with their heavy vehicles.
Now that the protests have lasted a good three weeks and the situation has not calmed down, the Canadian government under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is taking drastic measures. An emergency law passed in 1988 aims to suspend civil liberties in order to restore public order.
The conflict has thus reached a new dimension, since the measures are aimed at a section of the population that exerts political pressure primarily through passive resistance. Opponents of the measures accuse the government of exceeding its powers because it could end the protests differently. Supporters, on the other hand, blame the truckers, who as a minority are paralyzing the country and thus endangering the interests of the entire population.
Anyone who protests will be eliminated economically
The message from the government is pretty clear. Anyone who takes part in the protests risks losing their livelihood. Authorities now have the possibility to confiscate vehicles and bank accounts can be frozen or terminated in suspected cases without a judicial review. This applies not only to private individuals, but also to the companies that own the vehicles.
Fundraising campaigns in particular are thus effectively blocked. No matter how one positions oneself on the question of whether the protests are justified or not, Canada becomes the field test for Bitcoin. Because the government is opposed to part of the population and their livelihoods. This is also a controversial move within Canadian politics.
