In order to curb the flow of money from the trucker protests, the Canadian government is now also asking several crypto exchanges not to forward funds to associated wallets.
Canada's federal police force, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, has now ordered several crypto trading platforms to suspend transactions to and from 30 specific wallet addresses linked to the high-profile trucker protests, Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail reports . To that end it says:
"Any information regarding transactions or pending transactions relating to these addresses must be reported immediately to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police."
The seemingly drastic measures come against the background of the national emergency that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared two days earlier due to the ongoing trucker protests . The truckers, who are fighting back against the continuation of the corona measures in Canada with their protest, have been besieging Ottawa, the country's capital, for several days. As a result of the state of emergency, banks and financial service providers are now allowed to block the protesters' accounts without having to fear legal consequences.
This could prove to be an important lever, as the protest campaign has already raised more than USD 19 million for its causes via the donation platforms GoFundMe and GiveSendGo alone. After these cash flows were also cut off, the truckers switched to cryptocurrencies, which in turn allowed them to bring in 1 million US dollars in Bitcoin ( BTC ). So that these funds are not available for the continuation of the protests, the crypto exchanges are asked to refrain.
Yesterday the truckers were given an ultimatum to get out of downtown Ottawa immediately or face substantial fines or even imprisonment. The state of emergency also allows the government to ban travel to certain regions, so anyone coming to Ottawa to join the demonstrations is now considered to be breaking the law.
