The NYSE filing seeks to trademark the cryptocurrency exchange and NFT marketplaces, trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis said.
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the largest stock exchange in the world, has applied for a Metaverse trademark, with a request to reserve the “NYSE” for use in the crypto space.
The NYSE's move follows a growing trend among mainstream companies that continue to file crypto-related brands.
Michael Kondoudis, a Washington DC-based trademark attorney, shared details of the NYSE filing on February 15. According to him, the exchange filed the trademark on February 10.
Kondoudis stated that the NYSE would come to the Metaverse, noting:
A new filing filed Oct. 10 states that the NYSE plans to use the NYSE brand for NFTs, cryptocurrencies, digital collectibles and marketplaces for their trading and exchange. ”
The application relates to items such as cryptocurrencies, blockchain-based non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and other collectible digital assets. It also provides an online marketplace for sellers, buyers and traders of downloadable virtual goods that are “ authenticated by NFTs ”.
Commenting on the move, the DC attorney noted that the NYSE filing confirms " that the Metaverse is real and companies need to plan accordingly ."
He believed that the issue isn't whether companies are asking if the concept will be 'done ', but ' when '. He added that the US-based exchange is proactive about the idea as it wants to play a leading role in its implementation.
The New York Stock Exchange filing comes days after similar filings by Victoria's Secret and fast-food giant McDonald's.
Elsewhere, big tech companies like Apple Inc, Google, and Microsoft have joined the meta platforms to highlight the reality of the metaverse.
